Countdown To Kickoff: James Laurenaitis and Pete Johnson

Ohio State begins what we all hope is a national championship season Sept. 1 against a pretend OSU: Oregon State University.

There are just 33 days until the Buckeyes bash the Beavers so the crack staff at That's What She Said decided to enlighten fans about our favorites who have worn the scarlet and gray.

Pete will always be considered the second best 3 yards and a cloud of dust participant of the 70's only because he was in the same backfield as Archie but he made the most of his opportunities.

He graduated holding single season and career marks for TD's and points scored with 25/156 in 1975 and 58/348 for his career.

In 2000, Johnson was selected for the Ohio State Football All-Century Team. On September 8, 2007, during halftime of the Ohio State-Akron game, Johnson was inducted into Ohio State's Athletics Hall of Fame.

The #33 that most modern era fans will identify with was a player as a true freshman from the start. Got his first real calling when Bobby Carpenter went down with a broken leg in the 2005 TTUN game and did not disappoint.

One of the more decorated LB's in Ohio State football history he was awarded first team All-B1G and consensus All-American honors three years in a row (06-08) as well as a two-time Defensive POTY for the B1G(07 and 08).

Also honored with a major defensive award each of those years as well nationally with Bronko Nagurski Trophy (06), Butkus Award (07), and the Lott Trophy (08).

Countdown to Kickoff: Chris Spielman

The Buckeyes return to the field in 36 days. We open the season facing an Oregon State team that only won one game last year. They lost to teams like Colorado State, Portland State, and Minnesota. It’s probably safe to say that we will return to the field in dominating fashion.
So, with only 36 days away from dominating Oregon State, let’s look at a linebacker who dominated opposing offenses while he was at Ohio State, No. 36, Chris Spielman.
Spielman started for three years at Ohio State, and led the Buckeyes in total tackles in 1986 and 1987. He has the third most tackles in Ohio State history (546), and second most tackles in a single season (205 in 1986).

Spielman was a two-time consensus All-American, and won the 1987 Lombardi Award before being drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1988.

He was one of the best linebackers in Ohio State history. In 36 days you should watch the defense very closely because a new star could burst into the spotlight, and follow in Chris Spielman’s footsteps.

Countdown to Kickoff: Howard Hopalong Cassady

Ohio State begins what we all hope is a national championship season Sept. 1 against a pretend OSU: Oregon State University.

There are just 40 days until the Buckeyes bash the Beavers so the crack staff at That's What She Said decided to enlighten fans about our favorites who have worn the scarlet and gray.

Howard "Hopalong" Cassady (during his first game as a freshman for Ohio State., Columbus sportswriters who saw him play said he hopped all over the field like the performing cowboy) was born and raised in Columbus and quite possibly is one of the greatest athletes to ever wear the scarlet and gray playing both offense and defense. He won the Heisman Trophy for his offense but he was also a stud on defense, never allowing a completed pass to the man he was covering.

Ohio State retired his No. 40. He was a two-time unanimous All-American (1954, 1955), Big Ten Player of the Year (1955), UPI Player of the Year (1955), two-time Sporting News Player of the Year (1954, 1955), AP Male Athlete of the Year (1955), Maxwell Award winner (1955), Heisman Trophy winner (1955), national champion (1954), and NFL champion with the Detroit Lions (1957).

Oh yeah, he also played baseball for the Buckeyes and led the team in home runs in 1955 and in stolen bases in 1956.

Countdown to Kickoff: Keith Byars

Ohio State begins what we all hope is a national championship season Sept. 1 against a pretend OSU: Oregon State University.

There are just 41 days until the Buckeyes bash the Beavers so the crack staff at That's What She Said decided to enlighten fans about our favorites who have worn the scarlet and gray.

Byars finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1984 after a season in which he gained an OSU record 2,441 all-purpose yards, including a then-school record 1,764 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns.

Byars was a unanimous first-team All-America selection, and voted the Big Ten Conference Most Valuable Player.

Nobody will ever forget the comeback against Illinois (down 24-0) during which he lost a shoe on a long TD run.

He was the 10th overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1986 draft.

In 13 seasons, Byars rushed for 3,109 yards, caught 610 passes for 5,661 yards, returned five kickoffs for 94 yards, and completed 6 of 13 passes for 119 yards and six touchdowns, with one interception. His six passing touchdowns are the third highest by a running back in NFL history.

He also scored 54 touchdowns (23 rushing and 31 receiving).

Countdown to kickoff: Archie Griffin

Ohio State begins what we all hope is a national championship season Sept. 1 against a pretend OSU: Oregon State University.
There are just 45 days until the Buckeyes bash the Beavers so the crack staff at That's What She Said decided this would be a perfect jumping-off point for our Countdown to Kickoff.
If I have to explain the significance of the No. 45 to any of you in Buckeye Nation, you must turn in your membership card right away.
Archie Griffin is the only 2-time Heisman Trophy winner.
To me, Archie Griffin is Ohio State football. When I'm asked who the greatest OSU football player is of all-time, I don't hesitate to say Griffin.
He's the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, and the first and one of two (Brian Cushing) to start in four Rose Bowls. He led OSU to a 40-5-1 record and four B1G titles during his four years in Columbus. He ran for 5,589 yards on 924 carries, an NCAA record at the time, and finished with 6,559 all-purpose yards and 26 TDs. He rushed for at least 100 yards in 34 games, including an NCAA record 31 straight.
The No. 24 overall pick in the 1976 draft, Griffin played seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals
His No. 45 is retired but certainly not forgotten by OSU.
Keep checking back for more OSU memories as the Countdown to Kickoff will run as we see fit.

2018 Buckeyes Way-Too-Bold Predictions

Photo courtesy of Dwayne Haskins twitter @dh_simba7

Standing 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighing in at 218 pounds, all the way from Highland Park, N.J., your starting quarterback, Dwayne Haskins Jr., *and the crowd goes wild*

The excitement is building, and as the season nears I'm starting to get very antsy. As always I have very high expectations for the Buckeyes, and for my first post I'm going to dive into those expectations for the 2018 season.

Back on Jan. 29, 2018 I tweeted out my predictions for each game. Almost six months later I still feel pretty good about the predictions. If these scores hold true, Ohio State will average 45.3 points per game. For reference, we have averaged more than 40 ppg three times since Coach Urban Meyer has been at Ohio State (2017: 41.1, 2014: 45.0, and 2013: 43.2). I don't see any reason to think that this cant be the best offense Urban has ever had at Ohio State.

Moving over to defense, if these scores hold true our defense will allow 17.3 points per game. Last year our defense allowed 19 points per game, and our last three year average comes out to 16.5 points per game. Knowing that, I think 17.3 is a good number, because outside of our D-line we do have a lot of questions on defense. We know we have the talent at DB and LB, but until they step onto the field it's hard to assume they will be first round draft picks. Overall, I think our defense will be very good this year, and they will alleviate a lot of concerns that people might have when we play TCU Sept. 15.

I want to throw out three very specific predictions that will hopefully come true, but I do realize they might be very bold....

1. Haskins will throw for more than 3,330 yards, breaking Joe Germaine's all-time single season passing record from 1998.

2. JK Dobbins and Mike Weber will both rush for more than 1,000 yards.

3. Our defensive line will be better in 2018 than it was in 2017.

Before you call me crazy, hear me out. Last year JT Barrett threw for 3,053 yards. JK, JT, and Weber combined for 2,800 rushing yards. That comes out to 5,853 yards between all of our starters. I think its safe to assume Haskins wont run as much as Barrett did last year, but he will throw more. Looking at those numbers tells me that its not unrealistic to think that we can reach 5,330 total yards between our starters. I will note that its harder to predict Haskins stats with Ryan Day calling the plays this year. I will dive into that further in another blog though, so stay tuned. As for prediction No. 3, I don't think our depth will be as good this year, but our starters will be better. Because of that, our starters will stay out there longer this year and end up being more productive, and cause more destruction. We have three guys who could all be potential first round draft picks (Dre'Mont Jones, Chase Young, Nick Bosa), and the guys on the bench are not a bunch of scrubs. Long story short, don't sleep on this defensive line, or the 2018 Buckeyes because these predictions might not be that bold after-all. These guys come to Ohio State to play for national championships, and we haven't been there since 2014. These guys are hungry.

In honor of the spirit of blog 'That's What She Said." I'll end with something my wife always says during the football season,"Go Bucks, Michigan Sucks."
